Werum MES Days 2010 in Japan: Facts and Industry Networking
MES Day
  • Werum MES Days 2010 in Tokyo and Osaka enhance industry networking
  • Agenda centered on MES ROI and implementation methodology

  • Werum Software & Systems' Pharma MES Days 2010 in Japan focused on the benefits of installing a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). The two events in Tokyo and Osaka attracted significant interest, with 73 participants from 43 domestic and international pharma companies.

The company representatives were offered excellent opportunities for networking and for discussing industry trends currently challenging the domestic and global pharmaceutical industry. They made good use of the event to exchange ideas and acquire information first-hand from other market players.

    MES: ROI and regulatory aspects
In his keynote speech for the event, Mr. Christian Woelbeling, Senior Director Marketing & Sales with Werum, demonstrated that the benefits of investment in MES are not restricted to the larger players in the pharmaceutical industry. He used a number of customer projects to illustrate how Return On Investment (ROI) can be achieved after an average of approximately 9-36 months, depending on the size and type of project. The Right-First-Time approach is especially beneficial in manual manufacturing processes, where it clearly improves the overall quality of the manufactured product.

Mr. Woelbeling noted that in Europe and the U.S., MES systems are regarded as an efficient tool for cost reduction amidst growing pressure on prices and manufacturing costs, and are also considered to be an effective way of ensuring regulatory compliance.

Following this presentation, Mr. Akihiko Yokoi, General Manager and Solution Advisor at IT Engineering, Werum's Solution Partner, outlined the latest developments regarding the GAMP5 guideline and its impact on FDA compliance. Mr. Hiroyuki Tsubota, Assistant Principal Engineer with the Chiyoda Corporation, discussed one of the key benefits of MES systems, the Review-by-Exception approach, which dramatically reduces batch release approval times and therefore shortens overall manufacturing lead time.

Introduction to the Novartis flagship site
In the last presentation, Mr. Koji Noguchi pointed out the advantages of operating an MES at Novartis' Sasayama factory, and the savings made over five years of running Werum's MES solution PAS-X at their Japanese plant.

He also explained the methodology and the benefits of strategic and precise project management in ensuring the success of the MES installation at Novartis.

At the end of the third MES Day organized by Werum, Mr. Woelbeling confirmed the company's intention to continue hosting similar events for sharing experience and best practice in the years to come. "With PAS-X, Werum offers an efficient tool for both foreign-owned and Japanese companies in an increasingly demanding environment, particularly in fulfilling the requirements of the Japanese regulatory authority MHLW. Our flagship site at Novartis, along with countless other customer projects worldwide, shows that MES is cutting-edge technology for Operational Excellence, and is smoothing the way for reducing costs and increasing compliance - even in smaller-scale projects".
